Telehealth Prep Checklist

A remote consult works best when you have done a little groundwork.

• Write down your main concern and your top questionsDo not skip this oneLead with the single thing you most want addressed. Time on a video call is short, so a written list keeps you on track.
• Note when your symptoms started and how they have changedA simple timeline (when it began, better or worse, what makes it change) tells a clinician far more than a snapshot.
• Gather your current medicines, doses and any allergiesHave the actual boxes or a photo to hand, including anything over-the-counter or herbal.
• Collect any relevant readings or wearable trendsBlood pressure, temperature, glucose or a wearable trend can help. Bring the trend, not just one number, and say how it was measured.

Ten minutes of setup prevents most of what goes wrong on a video consult.

• Test your internet, camera and microphoneJoin a couple of minutes early. If video fails, ask whether the clinician can switch to a phone call.
• Find a quiet, private, well-lit spotDo not skip this oneFace a window or light so the camera sees you clearly, especially for anything on the skin. Privacy also lets you speak freely.
• Have your ID and any reference or booking number readySome services verify identity at the start; having it ready avoids eating into your appointment.
• Decide if you want someone with youA family member can help you remember questions and answers. Tell the clinician they are present.

Make sure you leave with a clear plan.

• Note the advice, any prescription and the next stepWrite down what to do, what to watch for, and when to follow up. Repeat it back to check you have it right.
• Ask what to do if things get worseDo not skip this oneA good remote consult always includes a safety net: which symptoms mean you should seek in-person or urgent care.
• Ask how to get a summary or prescriptionCheck how notes, sick certificates or e-prescriptions will reach you, and how to book a follow-up if needed.
